Cassonade

The sea: murky depths that make diving a real expedition, and a diving mask to brave them

In vanilla, the sea is a clear blue pool where you see the ocean floor from afar. With Cassonade, it's a real sea: the water is murky, the depths are dark, and what lives there comes out of the gloom at the last moment. Diving becomes an expedition you prepare for, and the diving mask, crafted from vanilla leather and glass, is what you prepare with.

Diving Mask 5 Leather + Glass Pane

Worn in the helmet's place, with a helmet's enchantments: the sea becomes a place you can explore.

How it works

The sea is no longer a clear blue pool: its depths are murky, dark and full of things you see too late.

From the shore

  • The horizon: the sea ends on a clean curve, and the sun and moon set behind it instead of showing through the water.
  • Far water turns opaque, hiding the kelp and sunken structures vanilla leaves lit in the distance.
  • Its surface no longer repeats block by block: the ripples, in the game's own style, are drawn over 8 by 8 blocks, so a calm sea seen from above shows no grid.
  • Its color follows the light: the sea darkens and greys at dusk, and keeps little of its blue at night.

Under water

  • Murky water: past about 30 blocks, everything is lost in the water; nearer, the view blurs, the more the farther things are, as eyes open in real water see. Drifting silt, carried back and forth by the swell, closes in the view.
  • Darkness: the distance dims the deeper you go, the sky only shows when you look up, the sun glowing through the waves, and never through rock; at night the sea keeps almost none of its blue.
  • What lives there: drowned and guardians appear barely 16 blocks away, out of the murk. It is fair: through the water, monsters notice you only within 16 blocks too, and lose you past 30.
  • Your eyes get used to the water in 3 seconds instead of 30: the sea is murky, not blinding, and you still find your way.

The diving mask

  • The diving mask keeps the view sharp and twice as long, about 60 blocks. Its snorkel lets you breathe with your head up to about 2 blocks under the surface, and your last breath lasts 5 seconds deeper. It protects like a leather cap and takes a helmet's enchantments: Respiration, Aqua Affinity, Protection, Unbreaking, Mending.

Questions

Why can't I see anything under water?

The water is murky with Cassonade: past about 30 blocks, everything is lost in it, and the view blurs with distance. Wear a diving mask to see sharp and twice as far.

How do I see better under water?

Craft a diving mask from five leather around a glass pane, shaped like a helmet, and wear it in the helmet's place: the view stays sharp and reaches about 60 blocks.

Can I breathe under water with the diving mask?

Just under the surface: its snorkel lets you breathe with your head up to about 2 blocks under water, as long as the open air is right above. Diving deeper, your last breath lasts 5 seconds, then you hold your breath as usual. Respiration still helps.

Can I enchant the diving mask?

Yes, like a helmet: Respiration and Aqua Affinity from the enchanting table, Protection, Unbreaking and Mending too.

Do monsters see me better under water?

No: through the water, they notice you only within 16 blocks, and lose you past 30.

Does it work in multiplayer?

What you see works on any server: it happens on your own computer. Monsters losing you in the water, and the diving mask, an item of the mod, need Cassonade on the server.
